Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
About the Game
🧩 A Block-Matching Puzzle Game Set in the Johto Region
Pokémon Puzzle Challenge is a tile-matching puzzle game developed by Intelligent Systems for the Game Boy Color. Built on the gameplay of Nintendo’s Panel de Pon series, it integrates familiar Pokémon elements from Gold and Silver into a puzzle format. Players rotate blocks to align three or more matching colors either horizontally or vertically. The blocks disappear upon alignment, and the remaining tiles fall, creating opportunities for combos. This core mechanic rewards fast reactions and strategic thinking.
The game introduces combo chains and garbage blocks as core features:
- Combos are created by clearing more than three blocks at once.
- Chains occur when falling blocks automatically trigger more clears.
- Garbage blocks are sent to the opponent’s screen in multiplayer after large combos or chains.
Multiple modes offer variety:
- Challenge Mode: Battle Gym Leaders across Johto while unlocking Pokémon like Marill and Pichu.
- Time Zone: Score as many points as possible within a time limit.
- Line Clear: Clear specific rows to progress through increasingly difficult stages.
- Puzzle Mode: Solve preset block formations using a limited number of moves.
- Marathon and Garbage Mode: Test endurance or survival against junk blocks.

Additional highlights:
- The soundtrack includes remixes of Johto music from the main RPGs.
- The opponent’s board is not visible in single-player mode, but a meter tracks their progress.
- The game supports two-player battles via Game Link Cable for real-time versus gameplay.
