The Battle Royale game genre was first introduced in the 2000 Japanese martial arts film ‘Battle Royale’ and its 2002 novelization. The basic concept of the game is about a large group of students either being forced to kill each other until one person is left alive. These are usually set in a post-apocalyptic environment and take place on a shrinking map. Players have to scavenge for weapons and items while staying alive, similar to the Player v Player (PVP) video game genre.
In the late 2000s and early 2010s, a surge of combat game titles developed by various independent designers led to an increase in popularity for first-person shooter games. The most notable of these was PLAYERUNKNOWN’s BATTLEGROUNDS (2017), which became known as the “battle royale” genre due to its focus on large groups of players fighting one another in isolation from others outside their immediate area. Although battle royale games differ from other shooting games primarily in that they allow players to form teams rather than acting alone, trends towards similar gameplay across popular titles have resulted in similarities between them.
PUBG – The master of the battle royale game formula, PUBG features massive 5x5km maps with up to 100 players. With you as a lone player, you must last 20 minutes if you want to make it out alive. In addition, your performance will be evaluated by other players throughout the game as well, so it’s important that you give every effort during every match! This is not for the faint at heart!
Fortnite – Developed by Epic Games, Fortnite Battle Royale is a battle royale game that is played in 100-player online matches. Players attempt to survive as long as possible by fighting other players with their squads. The game’s map is triangular in shape and covers an island, with mountains and forests located on each side of a central building called the “ Castle.” The objective of Fortnite is to eliminate all other players on the same team or kill them, while at the same time being able to stay alive yourself.
Call of Duty: Warzone – In this game players battle it out against each other in a free-for-all battle royale game mode. This game mode allows for extended play time with the ability to join random games and even create custom matches. You can customize your character’s gear, weapons, and perks in order to give yourself the best chance at claiming victory. Warzone has a huge map that stretches across all four zones and features everything from jungle to ruins and everything in between. The gameplay has been designed to be action-packed and intense, but also enjoyable for new players who might not be used to FPS titles or first-person gameplay.
Free Fire – This is a free-to-play battle royale game available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players parachute onto an island in search of weapons and supplies to survive. In Free Fire, different spawn points are scattered around the map, which means you don’t know where you’ll be blasting off from when the match starts. You can also pick up weapons at different locations around the map during your journey.
Battlefield V – This is one of 2018’s biggest releases, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans to play at the same time. After years of pressure from outspoken player base, EA has finally delivered a Battlefield game worthy of its name with great gameplay and memorable moments. It’s the most intense, realistic shooter of its generation. Battlefield V will take you to a world where war is hellish, where enemies are relentless, and victory means holding on until the end.
